Commodore's Update - May 2026

May is a month of renewal, and nowhere is that more evident than here at Howth Yacht Club with the launch of the newly built Howth 17 Anna. Her arrival brings the fleet to an impressive twenty boats. Congratulations to club member Gerry Comerford, whose dedication over the past ten years has culminated in this remarkable self-build. Anna is a magnificent addition to the fleet, and we look forward to seeing her on the water and competing throughout the 2026 season.

With warmer weather arriving, conditions are ideal for getting boats prepared, and it’s great to see activity returning to the marina after a long, wet and windy winter. I’m delighted to confirm that our Club Racing Launch Day will take place on Friday, 1st May at 7pm. This is always a fantastic opportunity to reconnect with fellow sailors, meet the Sailing Committee along with the race and results teams, and enjoy a relaxed social evening, rounded off with a quiz to support our K25 sailors 2026 campaign.

Our cruising community has already made an excellent start to the season, with over seventy members attending the recent start-of-season breakfast. At the time of writing, one of our boats is en route to France, while another is preparing to head south to circumnavigate Ireland, highlighting the spirit of adventure within the club.

We continue to await news regarding the EPA licence for harbour dredging, with the objections period now closed without issue. I would like to extend sincere thanks to Tom McMahon and the Dredging Committee for their significant work, particularly in completing the tenders for the marine pontoons and supporting pylons - an important and demanding task.

Meetings and discussions are ongoing regarding arrangements for accommodating boats during the dredging period. Further details will be shared in the coming weeks, and I intend to host an information evening to update all boat owners on progress.

In team news, I'm delighted to welcome Andrew to the marina team this week, and look forward to welcoming Craig to our hospitality team shortly. We also say goodbye to Julie and I’d like to sincerely thank her for her contribution to the club and wish her every success in the future.  We are actively recruiting for the marketing and communications role and if any members know of suitable candidates, please share details with recruitment@hyc.ie.

See you at the Club Racing Launch and I wish all members fair winds and safe sailing for the season ahead.
