Commodore Newsletter - April 2025
I am happy to say that the sailing season is starting to kick in.
With the arrival of Persephone, the goddess of spring, closely followed by North Star (Poseidon), the god of the sea, the omens are looking good for a great sailing season. There is great activity on the marina with the sound of sanders, the aroma of various paints, varnish and GRP.
The arrival of North Star into Howth Marina was a great occasion for our club and was warmly welcomed by members who were all invited to step onboard for a look. North Star will greatly enhance our sailing and racing experience.
We eagerly await the return of the crane with its increased lifting capabilities.
The lighthouse is scheduled to be removed shortly and replacement parts are on order. This will be cost neutral to our club. It will be reinstalled as soon as possible.
A new initiative by members was the recent launch of the HYC sharing, selling and buying boats event, with an attendance of forty interested parties. This is an excellent idea which would allow sailors and crew who would otherwise not own their own craft to weigh up all the possibilities of a shared ownership. The meeting was addressed by guest speakers and club members. This is a great way to introduce new members into sailing and boat usage. If you are interested in Sharing, Buying or Selling a Boat there is another opportunity to register your interest in this project over the next two weeks by emailing [email protected].
The social side of our club is very active and it is very important to keep an eye on the social calendar, as events sell out very quickly. Watch out for the Friday night quiz nights, the Sunday lunches with live music and the dance classes – these are among the many classes on offer at HYC.
As I wrote in previous correspondence, the Commodore has taken part in the Argentine tango classes on Monday evenings. This is highly recommended training for foredeck work: balance, and moving in a very small space while under the gaze of onlookers!
With summertime almost upon us, I wish you all fair winds and long sunny days of sailing.
