HYC Improve Your Sailing

These sessions are for you if you have completed the Learn to Sail course or if you have some previous sailing experience. These sessions are an opportunity to gain experience and become more confident with all aspects of boat-handling. Here are some of the topics that can be covered:

  • Assessing the weather, checking the tide for the planned duration
  • Rigging the boat in preparation for departure
  • Organising the crew and the sails on all points of sailing
  • Anchoring
  • Picking up a mooring
  • Man overboard
  • Stopping the boat in a controlled manner (heaving-to)
  • Departing and arriving at the pontoon
  • Ropework, including more knots (bowline and clove hitch)
  • De-rigging the boat after sailing.
