The Brass Monkey started 2026 with the New Year’s Day Race in aid of Howth RNLI. Seven boats made the start line under moderate breezes and bright sunshine. All boats cleared the line with no RNLI penalties applied.
Principal Race Officer Derek Bothwell sent the fleet on a course leaving all marks — including Ireland’s Eye — to starboard for two rounds. Derek was assisted by Gordon Knaggs and Pat Connolly. After the first three-quarters of a circuit, the race quickly settled into a steady rhythm.
Results:
1st: Pretty Polly

2nd: Amuse 11

3rd: Battling J

Our thanks to Commodore Kevin Monks, who kindly sponsored and presented the prizes, as well as to Derek and Gordon for standing at the East Pier lighthouse on a cold and breezy morning. Thanks also to Stephen Harris, launch officer, and assistant coxswain Ian Sheridan, along with all the crew of the Howth Lifeboat — who, despite starting the race at the same time as everyone else, were disqualified for completing only one circuit!

The Brass Monkey Spring Series starts on Sunday 25th January and finishes on Saturday 28th February. With warmer, brighter weather ahead, we look forward to seeing you all on the water! Click for more details and to register.
