  Club Racing- Howth Performance Handicap

There are two links to an explanation of the Howth Performance Handicap, one on the Results Page for 2010 and the other on the Club Racing Page. This is headed
Club Racing: Howth Performance Handicap.

Owners who are racing for the first time may find the article useful, as will those taking part in the ICRA Cruiser Nationals in May, or Cork Week in July.

Last year a number of queries were raised about the handicap systems used in Club Racing. The 2009 explanation of HPH on the website is now replaced with a version which, I hope, is easier to understand. I included a calculation of HPH taken from a club race to illustrate the way the calculations are made. Some information on ECHO and IRC is also included.

I expect to post the starting HPH TCFs on the site in the near future.

  Spring Warmer Series at HYC

You can now enter Online

The Spring Warmers for the Etchells, SB3's, J24's and Squibs will take place on the 10th, 17th and 24th of April this year. With two new classes taking part this year it promises to be a great event.

The series also doubles as a qualifying event for the etchells worlds in August so interest in the series will be high and it should help the SB3's brush off a few cobwebs before their Easterns later on in April.

  Race Officer Training at HYC

An ISA Level 1 Race Officer Training Course will take place in Howth Yacht Club on Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th March at 7.30 pm on both nights. This is open to anyone with a genuine interest in becoming a Race Officer.

Attendance at a Level 1 course is one requirement for entry onto the ISA Graded Race Officer list (see the ISA website - www.sailing.ie - for full requirements).

The course will be presented by Harry Gallagher and the cost is Euro Symbol20, payable to the ISA. To attend, email Harry at harrygallagher@eircom.net or phone 087 6536610. This course is open to members of other clubs.

Lasers 'Round the Island' & Prize Giving Lunch
Saturday 13th March

The annual Howth 'Round the Island' Laser race and Laser Prize Giving Lunch are on Saturday March 13th, sponsored very generously by Dinghy Supplies Sutton. This annual event is the highlight of the Laser winter season in Howth. The huge Frostbite entry this year of 66 boats will be joined by many, both from Howth and farther afield, who race each year to try and win the prestigious 'Round the Island' trophy. Former winners list is a whos who of Irish sailing. The race and lunch promise to make for a great day out and all are welcome.

The race is a simple lap around Irelands Eye (either way!) and then a rush to the bar for afternoon festivities. All entries can be accepted on the day for those not already racing in the frostbites.

First Gun has been moved forward from the traditional midday start to 11am.

Lunch will be straight after racing at 1pm, to facilitate finishing before the Ireland V Wales game at 2:30. The club has two big screens for great viewing, and an exciting atmosphere is guaranteed. Spot prizes will be awarded along with the usual season prize giving, kindly sponsored by Dinghy Supplies, Sutton. Places for the lunch are very limited this year due to space and the high entry.

Can all Frostbite sailors, or anyone hoping to make it along to the lunch confirm to David Quinn before March 5th, as places are very limited this year.

  HYC is Seeking New Members

As part of a new and ongoing membership drive HYC has suspended the initial joining fee for 2010. This decision was taken after a review by the membership committee and aims to compensate for membership loss, and change in membership dynamic in recent years, as well as to bring in new members of all ages. Ongoing annual membership dues remain the same.

To date this initiative has generated a very good amount of interest.
