On Saturday 13th August 2011, the Howth 17's Deilginis and Echo went on their summer cruise destination, Skerries. With the prevailing westerly wind the boats glided up the east coast under top sail arriving at the Skerries islands in approximately 2 hours and 15 minutes (and that was against the tide!!). Paddy Cronin and John Massey in their respective boats acted as motherships to the 17's.
Once safely moored in Skerries Harbour for the night we took to shore where we were warmly welcomed by Skerries Yacht Club and were met by additional members of the class - summer holiday mode was on. The class had one fabulous night dining in Harvey's of Skerries - definitely recommended.
During our stay an approach was made to the Howth 17 class to begin team racing with the mermaids of Skerries - watch this space for 2012.

Many thanks to Nick and Liz Massey for all their time in organising this event - it was truly great fun.
In 2009 Aura went on her holidays to Lough Derg. In 2010 Aura, Leila and Deilginis went to Crom and in 2011 Echo and Deilginis went to Skerries. So 2012 where do we go - suggestions?

The Oldest One Design Keelboat in the World

HSC 17 Footers on tour across Dublin Bay to Clontarf - this voyage is a long tradition & photographic evidence shows that the class has taken this voyage since early 1930's
|
The HSC 17 Footer Class is 112 years old. They are the oldest One Design Keelboat in the world and they still are as keen as ever to race, travel and to test their boats to the extreme.
This weekend (28/29 August) the Howth 17 Footer class is on tour again. Leila (3), Aura (7) and Deilginis (11) have traveled to the Lough Erne Classic Boat Regatta at Crom Castle, Co. Fermanagh, Northern Ireland. This is a weekend of racing against classic boats and the Howth 17 will be the oldest racing keelboat attending this event (see report above).
While three of our boats are visiting Lough Erne the rest of our fleet will race off the East Pier in Howth this coming Sunday at 12 noon. They will head in a southeasterly direction from Howth around the Bailey, into the magical sea area of Dublin Bay where they will take a right into Sutton Creek for the Sutton Dinghy Club Regatta. The boats will finish in front of Sutton Dinghy Club clubhouse. This is always a fun event with great celebrations!
The Howth 17 Footer class will soon launch their DVD of their 112-year history, look out for the launch.

On August 14th 2010 the Howth 17s raced to Clontarf Yacht & Boat Club for their annual regatta. This regatta has a long-standing history with the Howth 17 class and it is always a delight to race around the Bailey and into the mouth of the River Liffey in Dublin City. It is at the entrance to the Liffey where the boats take anchor in Clontarf.
This year's race was won by Peter Courtney in Oona (17), followed by Aura (7), Pauline (2), Isobel (19), Leila (3) and Echo (8). The Howth 17 Class would like to thank Clontarf Yacht & Boat Club for their hospitality and we look forward to our return on 2011.

The 6th & 7th August sported a fabulous weekend for the Howth 17 Footer One Design class as they took to race in the XRS Howth 17 Footer National Championships 2010.
The racing was amazing, positions were ever changing with no boats winning more than two races. This kept the racing intense and all competitors on their toes with everyone keen to win the XRS Howth 17 Championship Cup.
On coming off the water after the 5th race nobody had any idea as to who was the winner. Many competitors had their own ideas by calculating their perceived race results (workings were completed on scraps of paper!). The intensity of it all subsided when Gaye Bothwell posted the results on the board outside the marina office - this board was swamped with Howth 17 sailors keen to know their overall position.
Congratulations to Roddy Cooper Leila who became the XRS Howth 17 2010 Champion. Roddy Cooper was the most consistent of the day where he took two seconds, a third, a fifth and a discard of a seventh. It is well worth highlighting how close the racing was - that the top seven boats were no more than 6 points apart from the leader.
