A bit of history about 'The HYC Helmsmans Championships Trophy' (which I got from Brian Turvey) ....
The trophy was originally donated by Derek Luke after his Howth Seventeen 'Zaida' was demasted off Portmarnock beach during a club race in 1959.
The top of Zaida's same mast was subsequently mounted on a plinth and used as a trophy for a match racing event between the Mermaid class from Clontarf (including Brian Turvey's father) and the Howth Seventeens. The format was that the Seventeeners would race the Clontarf team in their own Mermaids in the morning, followed by a 'lunch' in Findlaters and they would then race in the Seventeens in Howth in the afternoon.
