  Report - August 18th - Wednesday
by Kevin Darmody
Back
Wind West F4-5 changing to variable 2-3. Very wet at the start but it dried up later.

PRO, Derek Bothwell was under pressure from the weather throughout the day but succeeded in getting the scheduled three races completed. With 138 entries, the fleet was divided into four colours and the racing was run in two flights per race.

The day began with atrocious down-pour which made launching difficult if not utterly miserable. Nonetheless, 138 brave and determined sailors launched their boats and headed out to sea into difficult conditions. As the day progressed however, weather improved with race three being held in sunshine.

The finish for race 3 proved extremely difficult due to the very strong cross-tide which had set. This resulted in some boats, who were within striking distance of the finish, taking up to 15 minutes to cross the line.

Results Summary
There were six Irish boats in the top ten. Sailors from the Netherlands, USA and GBR featured prominently in the results.
After day 1, Gijs Pelt (NED) is the leader on 4.5 points having won his first two races and getting a third in race 3.
