Howth Yacht Club
|
Howth Yacht Club originated as Howth Sailing Club in 1895. In 1968 Howth Sailing Club combined with Howth Motor Yacht Club, which had operated from the West Pier since 1935, to form Howth Yacht Club. The new clubhouse was opened in 1987 with further extensions carried out and more planned for the future.
The club with a membership of 2,150 is the largest yacht club in Ireland. It actively organises racing throughout the twelve months of the year and operates the 300 berth marina at Howth as well as about 70 moorings in the harbour. There is an active dinghy fleet consisting of Lasers, Toppers, 420's, RS Fevas, Picos and Optimists which include club owner dinghies as well.
In 1897 W. Herbert Boyd designed the Howth 17ft class and the first boats arrived in Howth the following year. The gaff rigged topsail class is the oldest one design keelboat class in the world and the eighteen remaining boats are still raced as hard as ever today.
Many World, European, national and regional events have been run by the club including the Optimist World Championships, the GP 14 World Championships, the Half Ton Worlds, the Mirror World Championships and this year the club will host the Etchells World Championships and the J24 National Championships.
