RIBs on a training exercise
|
HYC have a dedicated RIB (Rigid Inflatable Boat) Rescue and Training service for Club Racing, Open Events and Club Training Courses.
Junior and Adult members are encouraged to participate in Rescue and Race Management. Qualification is attained through the completion of HYC Powerboat courses - the ISA Powerboat Certificate and Safety Boat Certificates are also nationally approved.
The courses are provided free-of-charge to HYC members who are required to agree to be rostered for Rescue/ Training during the sailing season.

| Introduction to Powerboating Certificate |
Aim:
To provide a short practical introduction to boat handling and safety on powerboats being used in Howth Yacht Club.
Detail:
This course is suited to anyone new to powerboating to those interested in crewing RIBs. By the end of this course, participants will be able to safely crew a powerboat and helm whilst under instructor supervision.
Requirements:
No previous knowledge is necessary. Participants must be at least 15 years old and evidence of age is required.

| The ISA National Powerboat Certificate |
Aim:
To develop the skills and knowledge necessary to safely and effectively skipper an open powerboat by day on familiar coastal waters.
Requirements:
Previous experience and knowledge as well as proof of age is required.
This is a nationally approved certificate.

| Safety Boat Certificate |
Aim:
To introduce participants to the techniques and skills used in powerboats which are escorting racing fleets of dinghies, windsurfers and canoes. The course prepares people for providing safety and rescue to training fleets as well as assisting in race management.
Requirements:
Participants must hold an ISA National Powerboat Certificate.
The Safety Boat Certificate is nationally approved.
Assessment is continuous throughout all courses. The instructor may, at his/her discretion, require a practical assessment of boat handling skills and/ or a written paper or oral interview.
