  2010 HYC Dinghy Review
We need your feedback
  10th October 2010

Your junior committee are looking for your feedback on how we can further improve dinghy sailing in the Club.

We are meeting later this month to review Club Racing; Summer Sailing Courses; Ad Hoc Coaching; Management of Events, Safety and Club Coaching.

Examples of the feedback we have received to-date and for discussion includes;

increasing Start Sailing from 2 to 3 weeks.
including log book with fees for starting sailing.
Revert to staring Thursday summer courses at lunchtime and run through to Club racing.
Include parents rota for committee boat in HYC booklet and website from start of year.
Mandatory requirement for all sailors to have whistle.

If you have feedback or comments, please forward these to any member of the junior committee before Friday Oct 15th. Note that no decision has been made on any of the above points prior to our meeting.

Dates for your diary 2011

HYC will be running a number of dinghy championships next year including Feva Leinsters, 420 Leinsters and Oppie Nationals. Additionally our traditional date for the dinghy regatta clashes with Dun Laoghaire week so we are moving this forward to June.

Confirmed dates for 2011 are;

Oppie Brassed Off Cup - Friday April 22nd
Feva Leinsters - May 21 and May 22nd
VP Trophy - Friday May 27
Dinghy Regatta - Sat June 18th
 420 Leinsters - July 9th and 10th
Oppie Nationals 16th to 20th Aug

Summer sailing courses will run from 5th July to 13th Aug and Easter coaching will be planned for both the Oppie and Feva sailors.

  End of Summer Dinghy Season
on Saturday September 25th

Following the tremendous success of the end of season event last September, we’ve running this years event in the same format.

First up will be the Parents Race at approx 17:00

Once the Sat sailing finishes our plan is to go straight into ‘Parents Race’. Our 2010 instructors will act as race officers and it should be a good laugh for parents and kids. This year we will be using the Club Pico’s so new excuse for parents not to participate. You only need your sailing gear and a buoyancy aid! For those attending schools regatta, we will run a second flight at 17:30.

Once the parents dry off, this years instructors will present the summer sailing certificates. Presentation will be at approximately 18:30

Family Buffet will commence between 1900 and 1930

Bring the entire family down to HYC and join us for a social event for all. Prices for kids buffet is Euro 6.50 while adults is Euro 15 per head. Menu will posted on the website during the next week. Tickets will be available on the night.

Prize Giving
Prize Giving for the May, June, Thursday and September series plus our annual awards will take place during the dinner. We also have a number of fun and special prizes to hand out.

Note re presentation of ISA SBSS Sailing Certs.
Certificates will be presented to those sailors who have successfully completed the summer courses and have participated in the required number of races. As flagged throughout the season, the onus is on the sailor to track the number of races sailed. We’ll also be on hand from 1300 this Saturday to review log books.

Any questions, please feel free to contact Chris Howard or Eleanor Cahill.

Finally, congratulations to Robert Dickson, Fergus Flood, Richard Hogan, Aoife Hopkins, Sean Waddilove and their respective parents. All five HYC members have been selected to become members of the 15 man/women ISA Optimist Squad for 2010/2011. Just reward for the level of training and commitment put in over the past 12 months. Well done.

  September Dinghy Series
Sat 4th, 11th, 18th 25th. First gun 1440

Last years September dinghy series was one of the highlights of the 2009 sailing calendar with large turnouts and competitive sailing for the more accomplished sailors and coaching and encouragement for the beginners.

We want to build on this series and the tremendous level of enthusiasm encountered during this summer by have a greater number of sailors participating in this years event.

The format is the same as in 2009 with the following exceptions.

Firstly we’re bringing the first start back to 1440 so sailors will need to be leaving the slipway before 1415.

Secondly our plan is to have a dedicated sailing area for this years beginners which will be closer to the harbour. This fleet will be provided coaching and encouragement on and off the water.

Finally the Club Picos are available to rent for the entire series. Priority will be provided to our beginners.

Junior parents get to play their part this year as we will need assistance on the committee boats, on the slipway, in rescue RIBs and as coaches. Rota will be prepared and issued over the coming few days.

2010 Summer Sailing Courses draws to an end

The sailors on the final course
HYC's summer sailing courses have now concluded following six weeks of intensive sailing. The numbers of juniors participating was significantly up from 2009 and full credit must go to our head instructor Hannah Herlihy and her team. Feedback from students and sailors has been exceptional.

The Club Pico's were fully utilised during the courses and also in Club racing each Thursday night. These boats will be used again in the Dinghy September Series which will run each Saturday afternoon.

Starts will be available for Laser (all rigs), Optimist, Feva, Pico/Toppers. Sailors who have completed beginner sailing (level 1) this summer will have a separate sailing area adjacent to Aqua where we will be providing coaching and racing.

We'd like to remind sailors and parents that course certificates will be presented on Saturday evening, Sept 25th to those students who have successfully completed their course AND who have participated in the required number of Club races and events.

DINGHY PARK FEE's
Historically dinghies could only come into the Club in early June and they needed to be out at the end of Aug. With the increase in available hard standing space and also the extension to season duration, the Club can now accommodate dinghies for longer periods.

License for dinghy pen can be purchased form the marina office for one week, a month, three months, six months or for Oppie's annually. If your child sails in the Easter clinic, you can bring their boat down and leave it there until the end of September.

Fee's need to be paid to the marina office once the dinghy enters the park. Marine office will record your boat and contact details and they will provide you with stickers for boat and trailer. Each boat will be provided with a number and this will also be the safety number for your child for the summer.
