Optimist - Autumn Coaching Application Form >>
Calling all Junior Member Oppie sailors, Level 1 and up!
We will be running development coaching for the Oppie sailors throughout the autumn and winter. Ben Hopkins will be leading most of the sessions. Many of Oppie sailors know Ben as he ran this group last year, and instructed at the Club in '07. Ben is good fun and the sailors enjoy working with him. At each of the sessions, we intend having a successful sailor recently graduated out of the Oppie Class to help the sailors concentrate on developing detailed Oppie knowledge, while also giving useful tips and on the water training to the sailors.
There will be five autumn sessions, with places for 16 sailors. All sailors attending the sessions must arrive well-fed (!), and be rigged and ready for 1.00pm. Sessions will end circa 3.30pm.
The dates proposed are:
Sat September 20th
Sat September 27th
Sat October 11th
Sat October 18th
Sun October 26th
On Sat 4th and Sun 5th the National YC hosts the Optimist End of Season Regatta in Dun Laoghaire and last year fifteen sailors entered from Howth (11 of whom sailed outside the club for the first time). There will be no training in Howth that weekend but we will send one or two coaches to support the sailors at the Regatta if sufficient numbers enter. It was a very good experience for all sailors that participated last year. The last of the five sessions will be on Sunday 26th October to accommodate the finale of the adults' Autumn League.
The five coaching sessions will cost 130.
To ensure your young sailor has a place in the training group please e-mail admin@hyc.ie with their name. The list will be checked at 10.00am on Monday 15th September and the first 16 names received will gain places. Places will be confirmed by return e-mail. On receipt of acceptance, please ensure payment before the first session. We will endeavour to contact the parents of all relevant Oppie sailors about the coaching before 10th September.
The set of winter coaching sessions will commence in November and they will all be on Sundays. ALL SAILORS MUST WEAR DRY SUITS FROM SUNDAY 1st NOVEMBER. We have to keep the sailors warm and happy to be on the water!
We encourage all Oppie sailors with suitable boat-handling competence to enter for the Regatta Fleet in the end-of-season Optimist Regatta held by the National YC, Dun Laoghaire, Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th October. We will have a support boat on the water for HYC sailors in the Regatta Fleet, and aim to give first-time competitors (and parents!) a great weekend. Applications forms are or will be on the www.iodai.com website. Entry acceptance for the Regatta Fleet at Optimist events is usually restricted by number on a first-come first-served basis.
Any questions - please text me on 087-2585058.
